McAllen ISD staff are getting a raise.

On Monday, the McAllen ISD School Board voted to use additional monies generated from a recently passed Voter Approved Tax Rate Election (VATRE) to compensate staff.

The $5.2 million in added funding generated through the VATRE for 2023-24 will be used for the following:

  • VATRE additional compensation
  • Longevity pay
  • VATRE stipend

Later this month, all eligible employees (based on tiered years of service) will receive a one-time longevity pay. In addition, all eligible employees (full time employees as of Nov. 30) will receive a VATRE stipend.

In January, there will be an additional 1.5 percent ($855) annual pay for teachers and librarians and 1 percent retroactive pay for non-exempt employees.

Safety and security will be covered by a new Safety and Facilities Enhancement Grant the district received for $3.4 million. There is also the possibility of additional state aid in future legislative sessions.

Not only will staff see a raise but taxpayers will still enjoy a decrease of more than nine cents in the 2023-24 total tax rate from the prior year’s rate.

On November 7, voters passed the VATRE with 57 percent approval.
