College Admission and Career Guidance

At McAllen ISD we strive to prepare students for post-secondary success. We acknowledge that deciding on a career and the college admission process can be a confusing one. To assist students with this endeavor, we have equipped each high school campus with a full-time college admissions specialist. Each comprehensive high school also have a full-time career and technical counselor and a college and career specialists.

The Role of the College Admissions Specialist and the College and Career Specialist

Promotes college readiness ‐ Conducts admission assessment registration drives, assessment reminders, and presentations on how to interpret college admission assessment scores. 

Provides post-secondary financial awareness and FAFSA/TASFA application completion assistance ‐ Conduct several events to assist with this endeavor, such as: Classroom / Group Presentations, Financial Aid Information Parent Meetings, Financial Application Transmittal Night / Morning, Speaker Presentations on Financial awareness, promote Financial Aid Fridays and assist students on a one to one base. 

Discuss college /university opportunities- Provides group presentations and coordinates college/university recruitment meetings. In collaboration with district college center staff and guidance and counseling department staff host and promotes the annual college night and host universities round up visits.  

Promotes letter of recommendations, resume writing and volunteering guide -  Provides classroom/group presentations on letter of recommendation writing tips, resume samples and volunteering options/availability. 

Provides post-secondary application assistance- Conduct application drives, one to one conferences to assist and guide student on completing and submitting post-secondary admissions applications.  

Provides scholarship opportunities and guidance- Presents on scholarship opportunities, announce availability of scholarships including submission deadlines, and assist students with completing scholarship applications. 

Provides financial aid application assistance - Organizes efforts to assist students complete and submit their financial aid applications; such as, financial aid application transmittal events, financial aid Fridays, and one to one conferences.
