In just one year, McAllen ISD school counseling programs have established a standard of excellence for students across the school district.

In 2021, McAllen ISD became the first school district in the Rio Grande Valley to have a campus win a state CREST (Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas) award. This year, McAllen ISD jumped to an incredible 29 schools which will now earn a CREST award through the Texas School Counselor Association (TSCA).

This awards program began in 2005 in order to recognize schools with outstanding counseling programs. Schools receiving CREST awards have demonstrated a commitment using the 2018 Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs to improve the lives and achievements of students in academic, career and personal social domains.

The four components of the Texas Model include:

  • Classroom guidance
  • Responsive services
  • Individual planning
  • System support

The award indicates campus and counselor leadership and advocacy for serving students and the school community.

CREST is a continuous improvement document that gives a school counseling program an opportunity to demonstrate effective communication and a commitment to obtaining results. It helps counselors to evaluate their counseling programs, promote their programs, demonstrate the effectiveness of their guidance and counseling programs through empirical means, and to implement the Texas and national models for school counseling programs.

CREST winners will be recognized February 12 at the TSCA Professional School Counselor Conference in Round Rock.

Congratulations to the campuses in your district for winning the CREST Award (Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas) through the Texas School Counselor Association (TSCA). This award recognizes outstanding comprehensive school counseling programs.
