Chris Quintanilla, a junior at McAllen ISD’s Achieve Early College High School, will set a first for the district this weekend by becoming the first student to compete in the Texas Citizen Bee at the state capitol in Austin Saturday, April 23.

Quintanilla took first place at the Region One Citizen Bee in March to qualify for state.

The competition consists of two components, a written test and oral rounds. The Citizen Bee tests each student’s knowledge of Historic Individuals, Key Events, Documents such as the Constitution, Supreme Court Cases plus Civic Values and Skills. Twenty students from across Texas will compete in this civic education competition for a top prize of $5,000.
