McAllen ISD’s employees understand the importance of supporting their community. In recognition of that, United Way of South Texas honored the district with five awards on Friday, February 18.

For the fourth consecutive year, McAllen ISD received the Golden Apple award which goes to the top five school districts based on overall pledges. In fact, McAllen ISD is the top school district this year as staff members pledged $121,400 to United Way partners and programs.

McAllen ISD has been a top five supporter for United Way of South Texas every year for approximately 20 years.

In addition, McAllen ISD’s Superintendent Dr. J.A. Gonzalez earned the prestigious South Texas Hero award.

“Dr. Gonzalez was chosen because he exemplifies community service at the highest level and embodies the United Way Mission, to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community to advance the common good,” Lilly Lopez-Killelea, President and CPO of United Way of South Texas explained. “He engages with many organizations, whether they are public, private, government, non-profit, etc. to promote opportunities for children and local families.”

United Way of South Texas Board members presented him with the award.

"It's about teamwork in McAllen ISD,” Dr. Gonzalez said. “We’re a district of champions because we champion for one another and for our community. To be here this morning, receiving this honor is just tremendous for us and it says a lot about our organization as a whole.”

The South Texas Hero award was established in 2008 in honor of Ray Alexander, who served as General Manager for KRGV-TV Channel 5, for 28 years, beginning in 1981. Alexander served on the United Way Board and was instrumental in helping to establish the local “211” Information and Referral Services in the Rio Grande Valley more than 22 years ago.

For the fourth straight year, McAllen ISD’s Gonzalez Elementary was recognized as the Highest Per Capita Campus. The Gonzalez campus finished first in a region comprised of 16 school districts in Hidalgo and Starr counties and even beat out many middle schools and high schools which have significantly larger staffs.

An award went to ISD Campaign Coordinator of the Year Ann Vega of McAllen ISD. This award is presented to the school district campaign coordinator who has the best results in terms on contributions and engagement.

McAllen ISD’s Administration Department took the award for Highest Per Capita Department.

The United Way of South Texas oversees many programs which benefit youth and their families in Hidalgo and Starr County.
