McHi Mariachi Oro

The six-time state champion McAllen High Mariachi Oro will have center stage as the only group selected to perform for a statewide event.

Their virtual performance will play today for the annual Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention.

They competed with high school groups from across the state and came out at the top of the list to earn this exciting distinction. As the only invited performing mariachi ensemble, they will be featured in a virtual concert which premiers today. Thousands of music educators from across the state and nation will see it. The video will be posted for everyone else early next week.

“What an incredible honor for them to represent McAllen ISD performing at the largest music education convention in the nation,” McAllen High Mariachi Oro Instructor Alex Trevino said. “In a normal year, our students would be up in San Antonio at the Lila Cockrell Theatre and Convention Center performing in front of thousands of music students, educators and administrators from across the state and the nation along with the honors orchestra, band, choir, and jazz and percussion ensembles selected to represent. Our students are a bit saddened by this not being able to happen for them in a traditional manner but it does bring them great joy to know the we can still share this virtually with just as many people or possibly even more.”
